What individuals can do

What you can do to stop misuse and overuse of antibiotics!

World Antibiotic Awareness Week is an annual, global event to raise awareness about the serious health issue of antibiotic resistance. The event encourages people around the world to use antibiotics responsibly.

World Antibiotic Awareness Week provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. This year’s theme for World Antibiotic Awareness Week 2017 in the Western Pacific Region is: ‘Stop misuse and overuse of antibiotics. Combat resistance’. Antibiotics are losing their power because of misuse and there are serious consequences for all of us now and for future generations, but action now can change the future. Individuals in all countries are being called upon to handle antibiotics with care.

2017 Key messages

Antimicrobial resistance happens when bacteria and other microorganisms change after being exposed to antimicrobial drugs. Antibiotics are among the most common antimicrobial drugs used in humans and animals. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics is speeding up the development of resistance and putting us all at risk.

Antibiotic resistance can affect anyone, of any age, in any country. It is a threat to human health, food security and sustainable development.

Stop overuse and misuse of antibiotics by:

  • Seeking advice from a qualified health professional  before using antibiotics
  • If prescribed antibiotics, following a health professional’s advice on how to take them
  • Educating family and friends about antibiotic resistance

Prevent the spread of infection by:

  • Washing hands regularly
  • Preparing food hygienically
  • Keeping vaccinations up to date
